Help answer this question below.
Ok I think I've got it.
heres how it goes
49-13=36
36/2=18
18+13=31
So the answer is
silver-31
copper=18
49-13=36
36/2=18
silver = 13+18 answer 31
copper = 18
Okay lets figure this out using algebra.
Number of Silver coins = s
Number of Copper coins = s-13
So: s+(s-13)=49
Therefore 2s-13=49
Therefore 2s=62
Therefore s=31
So if there are 13 fewer copper coins than silver ones, there should be (31-13) 18 copper coins.
18+31=49 coins!
If your daughter can figure this out, she has just done a question they usually ask round about year 10. (That's 9th grade)
I think that there would be 18 0f each.
Why wouldn't it be: 36 silver coins
and 13 copper coins?
Is there a trick to this that I don't see?
WAIT! Yes there is. The 11.5 guy should be right, but-since when are 7 year olds doing decimals?
OH, now I see. Man I really need to go back to school....
It's simple algebra, but way too high for a 7 year old
the thirteen r def silver .that leaves half each of the remaining 36 .so 31 silver 18 copper
she has 18 copper coins and 31 silver coins you subtract 13 from 49 this gives you 36 divide in two gives you 18 this is your copper coins the other 18 you add the 13 to to give you 31 your silver coins
Oh, I have always sucked at math problems (and algebra and trig). I think I was spoiled when calculators came out when I was in 4th grade.
my bad, double post

You're reading My 7 year-old daughter's math homework had the following problem. Can you figure it out? "Anna had 49 silver and copper coins. She had 13 fewer copper coins than silver coins. How many of each type (of coins) did she have?" Huh?

Thanks John! I never liked math.

Me either mrshiny, but this was simple as soon as I realized I just subtract 13 at the start and divide by two from there.

I still don't really get it, the dividing by 2 part. You see, that's how dense I could be. My 2 little girls (age 7 and 5 love math and are good at it, so their intelligence must come from their mom. Argh.) ----mrshinyshoes
