In the summer months it is advisable not to cut lawns too short, this I suspect protects the roots from the sun and holds moisture in. However if you leave grass too long in the summer and then mow, you will have a very white looking lawn. So best thing is to cut regularly (once a week)but not too short, feeding too will enhance and encourage healthly looking green grass with a strong root system.
Tip - Remove weeds as soon as you see them
This all depends on the type of turf that you have and weather conditions.
Bermuda can be cut from .5-2in
Fescue from 2-up
Zoysia from .5-up
The key to maintaing a low cut is frequency of cut, weather, type of turf, rotary or reel mower, etc. TO maintain a clean cut at low height a reel mower is unsurpassed. Weather conditions play a role in height of cut and mowing height should be raised in stressful conditions i/e drought or extreme heat. You should also never remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade during a particular cut.
I have someone cut it for me every year, and when they do it I tell them to cut it as short as possible---I like the short grass look, but I know it's probably not good to have it too short, because it dries out it. I dislike grass---my preppy neighbours seem to idolize it and spend countless hours and $ making it look beautiful. Then comes winter and the snow for 5 months , and I think "Fools, what a waste of time and money you spent on that silly grass!"
It get pretty long, as I do not cut it.
