I just recently added a goldfish to my tank with an oranda. I've noticed that the goldfish is biting the oranda and its tail is now shredded and shorter. What should I do?

Fin nipping can be a problem when goldfish of different fin types are combined. I don't recommend grouping fancy varieties with commons or comets. Commons and comets get bigger, grow faster, and are more agile in the water. Eventually they will out-compete your fancier varieties for food, and in your case it seems the faster fish is bullying the slower one.

Secondly, your tank is simply too small for a pair of goldfish. Twenty gallons would be a more appropriate size. This will help keep the water in better condition, provide more space for the fish to grow, and reduce some of the bullying behavior. If the bullying does not stop though I'd recommend seperating the fish into seperate (larger) tanks. Some play-chasing and shoving is normal with groups of goldfish, but your Oranda might not be tough enough to keep up with a rough-housing common - or fast enough to get away.

I am also having this problem! But in my case it is my Shunbunkin that is attacking my Oranda. One answer suggests not mixing fancies with commmon or comet-tail goldfish but in my case it is two fancies. If I take out the Shunbunkin can I replace him with a Bug-eyed Moor?
