  • If you are due a refund, the IRS won't be knocking down your door. In fact, you can file using prior year forms up to 3 years from an unfiled return's due date. If you owe, you can also do that, but be prepared for interest and penalties when you do file, and one or more "nastygrams" (our word for those letters from your friends at the IRS). If the issue is incomplete information and not money, you can file for an automatic six-month extension (pushing the due date to October 15) with Form 4868. But, to file that form, you need to include a payment that approximates the tax you will likely owe, if you think you will owe.
