This is bad for her teeth! You need to take it away, she will get over it, trust me. I took the bottle from my kids at a year. They have done fine without it!

I had something similar to this only it was with a pacifier, I told her that as she got older it will start tasting horrible, I reopeated this for a few days then I coated the teat end with fingernails "stop and grow", she asked for a different one which I had also coated and she has never had one since. It is harmless but foul tasting.. a case of mild cruel to be kind :o)

If its only for bed, I don't see a problem. Its a security thing. My son is 5 years old, and threw his in the trash at 3. She will give it up when she is ready!

Personally, I've found it appropriate to set preliminary guidelines in having food in bed. I would explain to her the reasons and tell her that she's becoming a big girl and as she gets bigger there will be rules that she will have to follow. Some things are ok for babies, but she's not a baby anymore... :-)

tell her she has three more days and then she will be big girl and give up her bottle. Cut it off now. Be tough.

5 years old is way too old to be drinking from a bottle, IMHO. It's time to break that habit. She is a big girl now and it's time for her to take the next step. Stormy is very right though, this is very bad for her teeth. I'm sure you've heard of bottle rot. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.baby-bottle-tooth-decay.com/images/girl1-after-big.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.baby-bottle-tooth-decay.com/&h=399&w=600&sz=54&hl=en&start=1&sig2=pmPt0yk7VsPuQr_bXTkWag&um=1&tbnid=-poonLd0YUoFOM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=135&ei=5waNR5G5EYPqwwG-xazuDg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbottle%2Brot%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:*:IE-Address%26rlz%3D1I7GGLR%26sa%3DN

I went through this years ago. My daughter had so many ear infections because I let her fall asleep with milk in her bottle. If she needs her bottle & won't go to sleep with a pacifier, PLEASE put water in the bottle. The doctor told me that I caused all my daughters ear infections by giving her milk at bedtime

when i was younger i remembering mu mum saying that santa had to take it away

Painting the bottle teats with nasty tasting stuff will do it.....and don't tell grandma!

My wife told her son (now ours btw) that it was time to give it to a baby that needs it and she opened a bag and he threw it in. He made the decision with a little coaxing and it went very well. She's to old and it's bad for her teeth. But handle it delicately. No need to cause any kind of trauma. She's ready to give it up, she just doesn't know it yet. (Show her the images that FaerieWhings is linking, she'll make a choice then) lol good luck!!

I would say so -- particularly if you aren't brushing her teeth after the bottle (I'm sure you know all about baby-bottle tooth decay). It's time to be the Daddy here -- tell her she's a big girl now; and that she can still have a snack or drink before bedtime is she wants, but it's going to be from a plate or regular cup. End of discussion.

Here is how to handle this one. Show your child the bottle and tell her that she is a big girl now and bottles are for babies. Tell her that you are going to the toy store to buy her a dolly only if she agrees to throw her bottle in the trash...all of her bottles. Help her understand that dollies are for big girls, bottles are for babies. I am sure she'll chuck the bottle, get a dolly and sleep with her baby doll in place of the bottle. The bottle is a coping tool she is using for comfort at night. Replace it with an appropriate item such as a doll, you will love the results!

Are you seriously questioning this? Have you no one, not even a Dr. to discuss this sort of thing with? Your child is about 4.5 years too old to go bed with a bottle of milk. Unless there are dietary issues, your child should be able to consume all she needs nutritionally during the day by about 1 year old, and not need milk at bed, and the bedtime bottle should be taken away by about 18 months. She is way too old, and you are way too soft. Throw those bottles out today, everyone, as well as the nipples. Do not give her another. Is your child receiving proper medical & dental treatment? I can not believe that your Dr. & Dentist have not been beating you over the head about this for a very long time!
