If you ever get downrated (or downrate someone else) shouldn't at least a reason be given? Why, why not?

Most of the DR's I see, are usually invalid. Whoever does this as rule, generally has no idea what the question is about. I see a lot of DR's to question where there really isn't a scientific exact answer. Then again perhaps he didn't like the question or answer and in his/her mind it didn't help them. Don't be consumed by DR's, I don't think they will kick you off this site because of it.

A reason would be nice but a lot people simply downrate answers because they don't like them. It could also be a troll who is doing it after spending a night out stealing hubcaps.

No. It would result in retaliatory downrates. I've seen that happen. In one case, I've seen the two users insulting each other and calling each other names. What I find amusing is that with the downrates that I've been seeing here, I barely see explanations. It seems those who want an explanation for the downrates they've received don't explain why they downrate others. Practice what you preach people. As it is, I don't believe in DRs.
