Overall the Thriller Bark arc makes many references to the "horror" genre, including The Invisible Man (Absalom), Vampires (Hildon), Ghosts (Perona), Mad scientist (Dr.Hogback), Zombies, living skeletons (Brook) and devils (Gecko Moria). The Shandian Tribe were based on Native American Indians. The war between them and the Skypieans is similar to the situation where Europeans began to take land away from the American Indians, leading to bloodshed and war. The city of Shandora is equally comparable to the claimed "cities of gold" which many Europeans were given the impression of about America. The Giants of Elbaf are based on the Vikings.
