I'm going to go with Willie Mays. He could do it all.

I have to go with Babe Ruth. He had a higher batting average than Mays and hit more home runs. In 1920 (his first year with the Yankees), Ruth hit 54 home runs and batted .376. That season the Philadelphia Phillies were the only team to hit more home runs as a team than Ruth did as an individual. His .847 slugging average was the Major League record until 2001. Had Ruth played in modern times, his home run total would have been higher. Until 1931, balls hitting the foul pole were "ground-rule" doubles and balls going over the wall in fair territory but hooking foul were ruled foul balls. One researcher concluded that Ruth could have been credited with 104 home runs in 1921 if modern rules and field dimensions were in place. Also, since Ruth started his career as a pitcher, it wasn't until 1919 that he had more than 400 at bats. Ruth also held and continues to hold several pitching records. In his first World Series game in 1916, Ruth pitched 13 scoreless innings and a complete game of 14 innings. That was (and still is) the longest complete game in World Series history. He compiled an 89-46 win-loss record during his time with the Red Sox, pitching 29 2/3 scoreless World Series innings (a record that stood for 43 years). In 1917, Ruth won 24 games and lost 13 with a 2.01 ERA and 6 shutouts. He also hit .325 that season. His career pitching stats were 94 wins and 46 losses with an ERA of 2.28 pitching 107 complete games.

I will say it how an announcer said it a long, long, time ago.... The name is Ruth, George Herman Ruth. Bu as far as pitchers go, I'd say Nolan Ryan, and Cy Young.

-
what an unfair question!! Barry Bonds, and to hell with the mitchell report. Greatest of our time. Sandy Koufax, Ty Cobb, Johnny Bench...there is just too many greats to pick just one! not fair! i dont like this question!

The greatest pitcher of all time is Pedro Martinez. His 1999 and 2000 seasons are the single most dominant seasons by any baseball player hitter or pitcher ever. All around player its Babe Ruth hands down. In 22 seasons worth of just hitting, Babe Ruth was over two times better than the average major leaguer when stats are adjusted for all time. Couple that with 163 pitching appearances totalling 1221 innings of pitching that was better than major league average when adjusted for all time. 714 hr 2217 rbis he was walked 2062 times. Thats 3rd all time in hr's, 2 all time in rbis, 3rd all time in walks. It's been 73 years since he hung it up and no one has come close to reaching his level. Hank Aaron, Willy Mays, Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey jr, Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams. Nobody.

This is very debatable, my picks are: P - Babe Ruth (New York Yankees) C - Carlton Fisk (Boston Red Sox) 1B - Lou Gehrig (New York Yankees) 2B - Statistically Joe Morgan (Cincinnati Reds), Historically Jackie Robinson (Brooklyn Dodgers) 3B - Mike Schmidt (Philadelphia Phillies) SS - Honus Wagner (Pittsburgh Pirates) LF - Ted Williams (Boston Red Sox) CF - Willie Mayes/Ty Cobb (that's a tie for me, although willie did have better stats) RF - Hank Aaron (Atlanta Braves) a website I also stumbled upon that uses win-shares (the writer defines them as how many games the player helped his team win) and ranks them by position and by win shares there. http://baseballguru.com/egartman/analysisericgartman08.html

IT depends on your term of greatest Do you mean all around player, best pitcher, best hitter but to answer all of these Best Pitcher would have to be Nolan Ryan for his 5716 strikeouts considering 500 hasnt been touched by any on else so. Best hitter for average: Ted Williams Best hitter for power: Undisputed Hank Aaron but with the * Barrry Bonds There is no real best player Because No One could do it all not in this day an age at least No one hits, pitches, fields any more every one is talented in one or two ways now a days

Babe Ruth, He was one of the first greats. He set the stage, set the bar, and held the record for home run hits for so many years, and he probably didn't do it with steroids.
