Yoga or Pilates. They both strengthen and flex the mid to lower back. Or try hoola hooping. Seriously.

First, have to talked to your doctor about starting an exercise program? If not, do it. Secondly, the first answer gave some great ideas, but since you can easily hurt yourself if things are not done properly, your best bet is to go to a yoga or pilates studio. Proper instruction is so important.
