During meiosis, the cells containing the DNA for reproduction, gametes (egg/sperm) split in half.
Haploid is half the total number of chromosomes after halving, which is a number only ever present in gametes, in human case.
Diploid is the full number of chromosomes before meiosis, and after the two diploid gametes fuse, doubling the number back to the original.
Eg, the human diploid number is 46 chromosomes. After meiosis, the genes have separated and halved. Each gamete contains 23 chromosomes.
