There is still lots of gold hunting going on here in Northern California still. It's not laying in the open to be picked up anymore like it was in 1849, but there's still lots out there.

Where I grew up, the Mogollon Rim in Northern Arizona. I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but we have lots of geodes in the area of Whispering Pines. Cracker Jack mines have turquoise. If you climb down the mountain to Four Peeks near Phoenix, you will find amethyst. And of course we have the famous Lost Dutchman's gold mine.
