I think people "fear" things that are different. I will let the Holy Scriptures shed some light on this subject.
For the time that has passed by is sufficient for YOU to have worked out the will of the nations when YOU proceeded in deeds of loose conduct, lusts, excesses with wine, revelries, drinking matches, and illegal idolatries. Because YOU do not continue running with them in this course to the same low sink of debauchery, they are puzzled and go on speaking abusively of YOU
1 Peter 4: 3-4
The opposite can also be true. We appreciate, idolize even, those who didn't follow the crowd and became pop culture excellence. Surely, movie actors/actresses and professional sports players are not the societal norm, and went the way most society never can. Yet, we choose to flock to them, not shun.
I believe they do,It has always been a keep up with the jones's and all american ways in which we are taught since very young,if we were out of the normal catagory our parents would either take us to the shrink or give up on us all together,I thrive on diverity, and make my own path so to speak ,,but you know what?? if you choose to do this you may find yourself on a walk alone.
You might be putting the cart before the horse. Those who do not follow the crowd are, by definition, shunning society. If society goes along with their desire to not follow 'them' where is the shunning?
