We miss our girl!

Question

Help answer this question below.

My step-son didn't get a high enough gpa 2 terms in a row in college to stay in the program he's in. He can switch majors, but would have to pay his own way instead of military paying. He wants us to co-sign. I don't think it's a good idea. Am I wrong?

It depends on how responsible you think your stepson is, what his earning power is (with or without the degree), how capable you would be of paying it back if he defaults, how capable he is of paying for his own schooling without the loan or at a higher interest rate, and probably a few other things.

It is perfectly possible for a student to earn a degree without financial assistance, but it might involve some sacrifices and a good deal more time than it would otherwise.

I can't say whether you're right or wrong because I don't know you, your step-son, or your respective financial circumstances. Don't make the decision based on intuition, though. Crunch the numbers, maybe even consult a financial planner.

    HELL NO you don't cosign.

Perhaps offer some kind of match like for every dollar he earns you'll contribute $0.50 or a buck or two or something.....but don't become an enabler.

(David Ramsey often speaks of these things and recommends a book called Boundries)
