When a person has amnesia, does he or she really forget everything, including his language?

    No. There are different kinds of amnesia. Pretty standard, i think, is still knowing your day-to-day stuff- How to drive, how to play piano if you played piano, whatever, and just not having the memories attached.
    I think losing your language understanding is aphasia.

    In amnesia, I have never seen a case where a person forgot how to talk. Basic every-day learning has remained (you still remember how to talk, how to load the dishwasher, how to wipe after using the restroom), but you forget certain things like who you are, where you're from, people you knew, etc.

    If it's traumatic amnesia, it grounds itself in one particular memory, and more or less erases it, and removes or shades memories close to it, less and less shaded the further away in relation.

    Amnesia can vary by type and degree. Some people lose the ability to remember faces for instance (Prosopagnosia)

    Sometimes someone will lose an acquired language (for instance English) but remember the language of their childhood (for instance Chinese)
