Not always, sometimes they have to move "extra engines" to another part of the country, where they are needed. So, the easiest way of doing that is, to hook them up. But, mainly they are used in tandem for heavy loads or loooooong climbs.

Yup. That's the only reason they're there. One engine can't pull a couple million tons like multiples can.
One Cab is "Control" for all "Slaves" & when "Not Needed" (downhill) they can be "Switched Out" for "Fuel Economy" & still be used for "Dynamic Braking" if needed. John
