Official rules vary within the major governing bodies of the sport, making it highly unlikely that a unified world champion will be crowned in the foreseeable future.

Elbows should never leave the table. Secondary arm should never come into play. Whoever's wrist touches the table first loses.

According to the New York Arm Wrestling Association the first rule is safety. There is a photo of HOW NOT to arm wrestle on the New York Arm Wrestling Association Website in RULES at www.nycarms.com
