If marbles are not made of marble, why are they called marbles?

    The Special One

    The game was originally played with little polished hunks of marble. Then it moved to clay, and then (marbled) glass.

    Because the original marbles, dating back hundreds of years ago, were originally made from marble. But that would be too expensive now adays.
