Licensing laws very from state to state, and depending on the type of business you may be required extra steps (for instance, some states require you to have an auctioneer or wholesale license if your business is based on that type of trade). You also have a difference in how taxes are handled from state to state, for instance, in my state of Delaware, we are not required to charge sales tax, but any services performed within the state of DE must be claimed under a gross receipts tax. Your absolute best bet is to contact your local Department of Labor if you prefer talking to someone (our state is quite helpful to entrepreneurs), your other options it check your states official website for details. Many states are adopting online licensing services so you can actually obtain, pay for and print out a license in a matter of minutes. Hope that helps!
