because the U.S. government was payed by DuPont to make it illegal so they could have no competition with its 'new wonder material' Nylon!... thats the only reason and all the bullshit (and it is just that bullshit) is propaganda to cover up the plain truth

The mechanism which drove the public acceptance of legalization was the immigration of large numbers of Mexicans in the 1930's, many of whom used marijuana for recreational purposes. Politics of fear were used to allegedly connect marijuana to violence and crime (remind you of anything...Sadam Husein/911).
The Hearst connection seems plausible. As with most things, to find the answer one must simply FOLLOW THE MONEY.

This is a totally irrelevant answer, because I think everyone else has pretty much summed it up but...

have you seen those commercials where the girl's dog is asking her to stop smoking pot? Am I the only one who thinks if that girl's dog is talking to her, she has way worse problems than the fact that she smokes pot????

In addition to DuPont, as noted by Buxtonite in an earlier answer, William Randolph Hearst (protecting his timber interests) and the liquor lobby (for obvious reasons) had more than a little to do with this as well. There were also racial issues. Early claims by its proponents ofmarijuana criminalization ranged from "studies" reporting that Mexican immigrants using marijuana committed horrendous crimes to statements by the nation's top drug official at the time that Black people's "satanic" music (jazz and swing) were the result of marijuana use and that marijuana would cause White people to seek "sexual relations with Negroes."

The stuff is illegal because a lot of people think they have the moral imperative to mind the business of other people.

It's illegal because it is dangerous. Especially in non-medical doses. It should only be used by trained practitioners in pharmaceutical doses.
