He gets his powers from the absorption of the full-spectrum of electromagnetic energy given off by a yellow sun. His alien body cells capture, store, and convert the energy. In years past, lack of yellow sunlight and sustained effort have weakened him to the point of helplessness. He can be recharged naturally by staying outside or by an artificial source. The latter was proven when the hero Starman (this version had the ability to give off energy in any form he desired and is not to be confused with Starman I, II, and III who each used a Cosmic Rod (SM I, II) or Cosmic Staff (SM III) to gad about doing super things) recharged Supes in the field by emitting intense pulses of yellow sun RF energy.

I will turn this answer over to those who are true "Superman" aficianados. Green vs. Red vs. Gold Kryptonite. My favorite concept is "Bizzaro World". Their world was a square planet where all had super powers and ate "thanksgiving" turkey for breakfast.
