His costume was made for him by Ma Kent before he left for the Big City. In [i]The Man of Steel[/i] re-imaging, Ma Kent remarked that she's noticed that the clothes that stayed in contact with his skin seemed to be invulnerable to damage, wear, and stayed pretty clean (do the guy's laundry for 18 years and you start noticing things). She made the costume skintight to take advantage of that factoid.
