Why do cell phone companies only offer customers a cell phone deal when they first sign up for a phone?

Its like fishing and using elaborate bait to catch the fish. they want you as a customer. once you have signed the dotted line, the perks usually disappear. some cell phone companies are much better than others. the more longevity you have with one carrier, the more perks you are offered. my cellphone carrier gives us a free phone every year and updated phones, as necessary. we have been loyal customers for 6 years.
