  • Well, I don't have a comprehensive list, but Freixenet from Spain is an excellent sparkling wine. At approx. $10.00 CAD per bottle here in Ontario, it is one of the best values around. Their Cordon Negro is especially fine; we used it instead of Champagne at our wedding. BTW, perhaps the Answerbag Rabbit meant 'monetarily', as opposed to 'fiscally', which refers to how governments spend money. Sorry about being pedantic.
  • Spot on. The sparkling wines from Spain are called "Cava". Look for any of these wines to find great values. You might also try Vinho Verde from Portugal. They are more spritzy than sparkling, but they make a great warm weather treat.
  • try a uk bubbly if you can get it it beat the french at there game at recent wine festivals !!!!
  • Spain, as noted is one of the best sources, but you can also try Argentina and Chile - avoid the big names (like chandon) to get the best values (I have had the best luck with Argentina). Also try South Africa (Graham Beck Brut is a name off the top of my head) and Italy (if you look for Nino Franco, you will be very pleased with his "brut" prosecco called "Rustico" or if you like the sweeter styles, try those Moscato d'Asti bottles - it's Asti Spumante all grown up - frizzante style). Also look into Loire Valley, chenin blanc based sparklers for some very good values (as well as other French "zipcode" wines - Francois Montand to name one). I have had some luck with Australia and New Zealand too, but it is getting much harder to find the undervalued options. At least in the market I used to work.
