Athelete's foot (Tinea Pedis) is caused by three different fungi. The fungal spores can persist for months or years in a moist environment. Therefore if the person owning the shoes prior to you had the condition and the shoes have any residual moisture inside, then the fungus could be spread to you. Secondhand shoes should be dried well and an antifungal powder sprinkled inside to limit the risk of infection.
