  • Wankel engines offer better performance for the displacement and weight of the engine compared to 4-cycle engines. A Wankel is, in effect, a 2-cycle engine. They are simpler, have substantially fewer parts, and are potentially more reliable, although difficulties with rotor seals has plagued many manufacturers, including Mazda in the early years. On the down side, their emissions and fuel consumption are higher - typical of 2-cycle engines - and rotor seals are a weak point in the design. This is, perhaps, reflected in their availability, since Mazda is the only company currently producing a vehicle powered by a Wankel rotary engine.
