Question

Help answer this question below.

I applied for a platinum credit card, where the application said I'd receive a $20,000 limit. When I received the card, the actual limit was $500. Is this false advertising, and do I have any recourse?

In most cases I have seen this offers with something like: "You have been pre-approved for UP TO $20,000 in credit limit". That means that they can give you any credit line, from $1 to $20,000.

Even if the "up to" was not there, I'm almost sure that somewhere in the letter or the application, in small letters, they said something about: The ACTUAL credit line will depend on your credit check at the time of your application".

This guys have very good lawyers that cover every aspect of their documents. Now, even if what I have assumed is correct and this is not false advertising, it can always be considered deceiving. So, if you really feel like spending some time on this, you can always write a letter to your State Attorney or the Commisioner of Credit and tell about it. You will need to provide copies of all the paperwork with your letter.

I know is frustrating, and really drives one mad to deal with some of these huge corporations. Good luck!
