If you are looking at raw logs, one way to tell is by the speed of the requests to your server. A robot will make many requests in quick succession, much faster than a typical visitor. If your website has just one page, hide a few dummy links on the page (white text on white background)... a robot will request these, a human visitor won't. While it depends on the robot, most robot's come back with an IP address in the same range as before. If you suspect a robot, trace the IP address to see where it's coming from.
