The ads are chosen based on what's on the page. If the question contains the word gay, you'll likely see "gay ads."

The ads are normally relevant to the content on the page. If you don't want to see any ads do what so many of us have already done and switch to Firefox with the AdBlock Plus extension. You'll also have a built-in spell checker.
