  • I went through this very thing. One of my sons played saxophone and one played trombone. Once they were out of school they never touched the instruments again. I had bought them new and decided to sell them. I placed an ad in the classified ads in the newspaper with the widest circulation in our area and sold them for about 1/2 of the original purchase price. I believe that one reason I was able to get 1/2 instead of less than that was timing. I placed the ad right as a new school year was beginning and sold them within 2 weeks. You also can have better luck if you let the band teacher of your local high school know that you have instruments for sale as many parents cannot afford to purchase a new instrument and some do not want to rent the instrument.
  • Depnding on the people you know and how much money you are willing to spend. You can "fix up" your horn or which ever instrument you are selling to be at a higher resale price. Just like you would do with a car. I have been given deals for old horns that don't really work for a high price. So find what might be wrong with the instrument and fix it. This will bring the resale price up dramatically. In my opinion people, don't really care how old a instrument is (unless its over 30 years old). Just as long as it works properly and there is no weird smell coming from it.
