  • Gold chains can not be "pure" gold as gold is very mallieable (sp?) and is too soft unless alloyed with another metal to make it strong enough to wear. A common metal alloy is copper. A real gold chain will have a mark detailing what karet of gold is in the chain. If there is no such mark there is a great possiblity that the chain is fake.
  • If it's coated (Gold foil or plating over another metal), simply choose a place that isn't noticable and give it a small scratch or nick. Another classic is water displacement. Depending on the purity of the gold, it's specific gravity would displace a certain amount of water. Wrong amount and you know that the gold is adulterated with a different metal. This where Eureka came from. The Greek philosopher, Archimedes, was trying to figure out if the same adulteration had been done to a King's crown. He stuck his feet in the bathtub, saw the water get displaced, and shouted,"Heureka!" (Greek for "I have found it")
