This is a tricky, civil question. You should ask a civil attorney.

Definitely consult an attorney, but if you weren't the landlord during the time your buildings contained asbestos, then you're probably not liable. If you are aware of a possibly hazardous environment and take no action to correct it, you could be liable. Most consultations with an attorney are free of charge and it may be worth your while to discuss the issue.

Only a civil attorney can answer your question. And, you really need one.

You said used to have right? Has the asbestos been all the way gone since the day you bought the building? You need a civil attorney. You should have gotten an attorney as soon as you bought the house, or as soon as you heard the words cancer and asbestos in the same sentence.
