Lets see, I ram something through skin and cartridge, leaving an alien artifact stuck through my skin... will my body react nicely to that and laugh it off or will it fight it and take umbrage to such event?

4 days later swelling and pain should still be expected. And if Pal decided to try on a big thick stud, there will be more pain, and more swelling.

    Treating the Swelling:

Ice pack. Not exactly. Take a small zip lock bag, take liquid dish soap and fill the bag 1/2 way. Seal the bag. Place that bag in a second bag and seal that bag. Now put it in the freezer for about 2-3 hours.

After its been in that long it will be very very cold but not frozen. Get a thin material like a t-shirt. Place the bag of cold dish soap in that. With one layer of t-shirt between the plastic, place all of it on the side of the head, over the ear that is pierced. most likely this means laying on your side with your head on a pillow, pierced ear up.

Let the pack sit for about 20 minutes.

Repeat 3-4 times a day for about a week.

Indications should be a reduction in swelling over the course of a few days. Swelling should be at least 1/2 of by the end of a week (7 days) and non-existent or so slight as to not be very noticeable to the casual glance at the end of week 2.

    Piercing care. Wound Care 101

Keep the wound clean, using any number of cleaners on the market that are designed for open holes (Go to a drug store and ask the pharmacist s/he will hook you up).

Turn the ring/stud/bar (if you can) once a day. If this is a hoop then you will need to slide it along, however you need to clean the ring and sterilize the area BEFORE you pull fresh metal through the opening. It does no good to clean AFTER pulling the metal through.

If it hurts too much to pull or turn the stud/ring what ever today then DON'T do it.

Wash your hands before touching your ear or the ring. If you do touch without washing your hands (and if you remember) then follow immediately with a cleaning with an antibacterial of the ring and ear/hole.

Mind a piercing is purposefully injuring the body then unnaturally preventing the wound to close so it can heal, one is causing the wound to heal in a manner that is against its will. To leave a permanent hole.

when one normally injures the body and allows or even forces the wound to close, that seals the wound and it heals far faster - at the very least it knits nearly immediately and the pain lessens.

Pain is telling you something is wrong. In this case what is wrong is you have a bit of metal sticking through you, so yeah its gonna hurt.

    ;-)
