Elephants do like peanuts, but an elephant cannot live on peanuts alone. The elephant is the world's biggest land animal, and spends about 16 to 18 hours a day eating to make sure it stays that way! Elephants are vegetarians and can eat hundreds of pounds of leaves and branches a day. This salad is washed down with several hundred gallons of water. Elephants tend to favor fresh fruit, but they'll also eat peeled bark. If you've ever seen an elephant eating peanuts out of somebody's hand, you'll notice that they don't bother to peel them before eating them.
