I have an Isuzu Rodeo V6. When I start the car I get a rough, metal on metal sound and when I accelerate I get a low rattling noise from the front right part of my engine. What could be wrong?

I had the same vehicle (1996) and problem - was told it was the oil, then the battery, then the starter, then the alternator - all things were replaced and fixed, and it still sounded like the engine was going to blow up. I would say trade it while the 4 wheel drive still works, and get something else.

i have the same car(2000) and problem, i was told that one of the rockers could be loose as far as the rattling goes which started after a desperate attempt to get out of mud without having 4x4, and the rough sound on start up is usually caused when the oil level is low or if its been sitting for a while, with that being said i was also told that the rattling problem could be fixed in a day with patience and some head work done to the motor and cost less than $100, but until then you can run a 10w-40 with some Lucas oil stabilizer and that will quiet down the rattling as well as start up and run a lot smoother.

I replied but perhaps you didn't receive it. I was thinking that perhaps the metal on metal when start up could possibly be the starter not fully disengaging or perhaps a low oil level or faulty or weak oil pump leaving the cylinders dry on start up. This could also cause the low rattle on acceleration too...simply not enough oil getting to where it's needed. But once...on a Ford Bronco II, we had a bad RF wheel bearing that growled upon acceleration and it simply needed regreasing a little more often than most. I'm an autobody repairman...so please, this is only a suggestion.

If you've checked you oil and it's fine...look at your starter motor...is it fully disengaging? that could cause the first noise. As for the second noise you mention...I would look at re-greasing or perhaps replacing your wheel bearings...they will produce a low hummimg or grinding noise when out of grease or just plain wore out.And it's an easy do it yourself look see to perform.
