You must go to one of three umpiring academies located in Florida. They are owned by Joe Brinkman, current MLB umpire, Jim Evans, former American League Umpire, and Harry Wendelstedt, a former National League whose son, Hunter, is currently a MLB umpire. At the academy, the best students will be asked to come back for evaluation by the Supervisor of Minor League Umpires.

Once you get through that stage and get a job, it takes 7-10 years in the minors to make it to the big leagues. All along the way, minor league umpires are evaluated for promotion to the next level, or potentially for dismissal.

My nephew went to the Wendlestedt school, got a job, and worked in the Northwest League this past year. He's just 22 and his goal is to make the big leagues by the time he's 32.

The things that they look for at the school are poise, judgement, the ability to think on your feet, hustle, and they really like big men. My nephew is 6'9" tall and they loved that.

I have gone to the Evans school quite a few years ago just to learn, not look for a job, as I used to be a major college level umpire doing a lot of PAC-10 and WAC games.

The schools last around 14 days and cost about $3000 to attend.

Write if I can be of further service.
