  • Paul, you are, like many Americans, assuming that everyone on AB is American. I am Australian, have never heard of anyone bagging West Virginia, would not do it myself (why would I?) and cannot understand why people would. I do not know anything about West Virginians that distinguish them from other Americans. Now if you spoke about Tasmanians.....that is another story. :-)
  • One of my favorite jokes is about West Virginia. Q: Why do birds fly upside down over WV? A: Nothing worth crapping on. My mom is from West Virginia and she's the greatest. I don't think that folks from WV are idiots. A vast majority of people in general ARE in fact idiots, but that has little to do with them being from WV. It is one of the most beautiful states. Personally, I like WV. Unfortunately, it has been considered backwoods and backwards for as long as I can remember. Honestly, I think that the traditional jobs/industries in WV have been of the unskilled labor variety which coupled with a staggering poverty rate has led to many misconceptions. The poverty situation has improved and Clarksburg is all lawyers and financial planners these days. It will probably be awhile before the stigma of being from WV is a memory though. At the risk of drawing fire, I have to say that when I hear the term "hillbilly" (I apologize in advance to those I offend)--I automatically think of Kentucky. :)
  • I lived in Virginia for almost 2 years. Personally I never had an issue with W.Virginians, it was the MD and DC residents that were the main problems.
