Ice Man, you and I have similar traditions. Very rarely do I go out to a party or dinner on New Year's Eve. I prefer it at home. :-)

I think a lot of cultures/regions have similar beliefs. For instance, as I'm originally from the south, my mom always makes black eyed peas for good luck on New Year's day. (which reminds me, I don't think I have any in the pantry!)

There is an annual "Polar Plunge" every year in Chicago downtown on the shore of Lake Michigan. I usually stay home and watch it on TV..... the ambulances are lined up for those participating.

A few days ago the waves were 25 feet high and flowing over the barriers onto Lake Shore Drive, a portion of which was closed. We had a daily high of zero (0) degrees farenheit, and 55 mile per hour winds. It is already bitter cold; usually it is not this bad until late January - late February.

You're welcome m'dear. Jim is a Texas boy and loves loves loves blackeyed peas. In fact yesterday I made some babyback ribs, whole grain what (Near East Brand) and opened some blackeyed peas and he was a happy as a clam at high tide! :)

Oooo, I hope you go some place warm. Camping would not do here in Chicago. With a recent daytime high of 0 degrees, and 55 mile per hour winds, it is best to camp right indoors... :-) Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year!

we're still deciding. either at home or at a friends. another friend called this morning to ask what we were doing, but then he also didn't exactly invite us to their house. but, he does live over an hour away, and we'd really have to stay over if we did. We love these guys, but they drink a lot more than we do, and they also smoke very heavily (neither of us do...I quit years ago). We end up feeling crappy from inhaling so much second-hand smoke!
