  • This is deeply disturbing to me. :( I used to raise parrots. African Greys are HIGHLY intelligent birds that need stimulation, company and attention. The bird should have plenty of human interaction and toys to play with. They can become bored and depressed if they don't have this, leading to behavioral problems. NASTY behavioral problems, ranging from feather plucking to extreme aggression and "acting out." Please tell me that this wasn't a hand-fed baby. How old is the bird and how long has it been kept in these conditions? Your family is throwing away an opportunity to have a delightful companion that can, with proper care, live to 50-70 years of age. This breaks my heart.
  • This bird needs a better life. Often when stimulation hasn't been provided for a parrot for many years, their brain actually atrophies and they can never be the bird they could have been. I hope that's not the case here but it has been many years. Is it possible for the bird to go to a new home, somewhere that will give it a big cage or an aviary and +bring it out each day and get played with? Someone who will give him proper nutrition. He isn't a happy bird. There are people out there who could give him everything he needs. I don't think you can do this for him. Can you buy him a new large cage? Is he tame enough for you to bring out and play with? Could he make use of a bird playground? Could you feed him fresh veggies and fruits?
  • Would your gran allow you to take the bird to a rescue organization or bird sanctuary? That bird is a highly sensitive creature that craves interaction and play. Their minds function at a similar level to that of a young child. At least YOU are seeing him once a week. Try googling 'bird sanctuaries' or 'bird refuges' in your area. What city is the bird located in?
  • P.S.
