From Bangkok, out and about and around Thailand in January. For July, try the Alaska Highway from Dawson Creek to just past Whitehorse, then turn northeast and take the Dempster Highway to Inuvik ... be sure to get back south before late August.

California coast is always a good choice, even in January. One good things about Highway one is that winter has less traffic and it's the same gorgeous twisties and scenery:-)
