If a ball goes through a player's legs it is almost always scored an error, even if he never touches it. Usually an error is only called if a fielder touches the ball but fails to make the play. If a fielder doesn't touch the ball because he isn't quick enough, makes a mental misjudgment, or for any other reason, no error is given. Scorekeepers do not give players errors for so-called "mental errors" or "team errors."
