There is an biological and evolutionary reason for the mushroom shape of the glans (head) of the penis.
It is slightly larger than the shaft of the penis so that when a man thrusts in and out of a woman he would remove any rival lover's semen from her vagina. This would give him a better chance of getting her pregnant.
This may sound strange when you think about it in terms of today's society, but you have to consider that the penis evolved over hundreds of thousands of years. We used to be uncivilized and more similar to wild animals than we are now. Sex was a way to propagate our genes and competition was the norm.
