Some truck drivers are elderly people. A few haz-mat drivers are, too. What prevents haz-mat drivers from having a sudden heart attack, especially if the haz-mat truck is a fuel tanker?

In the U.S., there is no age of disqualification to drive a commercial vehicle. While it is still quite possible for *any* truck driver to suffer a medical emergency while driving, the risks are certainly reduced by the bi-annual DOT (Department of Transportation) required phyisical. Certain medical conditions can cause a driver to be disqualified, at any time, from operating a commercial vehicle. While there is no list of prohibited medications, exactly, a doctor must certify that the driver is alright to drive while taking that medication. Liability can then fall on the doctor if a medication or medical condition later causes an accident. That's a risk not many doctors are wlling to take, and perfectly well qualified drivers have found themselves disqualified for just such a reason. Things like sleep apnea, diabetes, and heart conditions can disqualify a driver if the condition is not well controlled. Epilepsy carries the strictest of consequenses, and it is nearly impossible to regain medical certification after a seizure of any kind.

what is the difference on their ages? Children have heart attacks.. Haz-mat is a commodity that is used in a lot of the products that we use, and MUST be transported. It can be gasses, poisons, explosives, floor stripper, paints, resins, pool chemicals.. Without trucks, America STOPS.. Why ask such a question is beyond my imagination..
