What happened when Germany broke its sitzkrieg in 1940?

    The immediate affect of this was an end to a stalemate and the collapse of French resistance which stunned the Allies.

    France had excepted the Germans to attach directly through their Maginot Line which they'd been fortifying since the end of WW-I. The idea was to make so strong a defensive line that the Germans would never try to breech it. The French were partly right in that the Germans never tried to break through the Maginot Line. Instead they went around it

    Soon after this followed the disaster at Dunkirk which would then lead to the Battle of Britain.

    In short this was the end to the "phony war"and the start of a real conflict.
