Help answer this question below.

I drive a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland while driving the vehicle did not want to slow down when i took the foot off of the gas pedal, when vehicle finally stopped i placed it in park and RPM gauge slammed up to 5,000. What's wrong?
