Certainly, that is all that they had to use. They drank the water, cut trees for posts or poles. Hunted for game. Collected berries and nuts. They respected the land by many accounts that have been recorded.

They used them with respect for nature and would never abuse the natural resources.They would kill animals for food and furs when needed and alway gave thanks to mother nature for their bounty.The conquerors the North America came along with no respect for anything and screwed up the natural resources,neither respecting the natives or their land.

They did not waste and respected the earth. Oh, and they smoked lots of herbs!

That is all they had to survive. They knew that they needed all that earth had to offer for survival...so they treated earth gently and only took what was needed and always gave back.
