I think that your key has cracked inside the switch, or maybe there is a broken or stuck tumbler. Ignition switches are VERY difficult to work on, but maybe try spraying some pb blaster or liquid wrench into the key hole and working the switch back and forth, but don't pull on the key too hard or you might break it off inside the switch, in which case you would almost certainly have to disassemble the steering column to remove the switch. If you normally have to pull a lever or push a button to release the key, then it is likely that that mechanism is broken.

Did you ever fix this problem? I am having an identical problem with a 99 pontiac grand prix.

i too have a 01 Grand Prix GT and have encountered the same problem except i can start my car. i believe the problem is with the shifter. when your car comes to a stop and you have your foot on the brake, wait a few seconds and put your car in park, wait a few more seconds and release the button on your shifter. after releasing the button, you should hear a faint 'click' from your steering column. you should now be able to remove your key. if it doesn't work the first time you just have to kinda putz with the shifter button until you hear that click.
