  • its Astro Boy
  • Wikipedia links to an article that pegs the first 'anime' as a 3 second clip from 1907. As that seems too short to really count as an 'anime', I'll mention that there were anthromorphic propaganda anime produced during WW2, which is kind of...weird, and yet entirely in line what I expect of Japan.

  • The first anime was Astro Boy. It was released back around the 1900's. And, yes, they do consider their cartoons all anime. Though if some cartoon was brought from America, or some other place, it would just be called a cartoon.
  • well technically otogi manga calendar was the first anime series and also what the others said alrdy is true as well
  • the first anime ever is in 1917, though its not clear if its a series or whatever. and at the time, the creator of astroboy (tezuka) was not yet born -_- astro boy is a turn point for anime history, but not the first anime ever
  • the first animation shown to audiences in Japan was made around 1917, the same period as most developed countries. they tended to be just a few minutes long and many probably didn't have titles. Some were based on folktales (like old Disney movies, you know.) Astro Boy is called the first anime because it was one of the first japanese animations to get exposure in the west. It also was one of Japan's first episodic TV anime.
