Once you make a big change in your life, like leaving your childhood house, things will not be the same. It means you cannot go back or expect things to be the same as they once were.

My understanding of never being able to go home is that you can't turn the clock back.

It means that your home you knew was mainly because the people you knew (friends, neighbors, etc.) and those people will all have changed or gone if you return. "Home" is not just the physical location but the whole cast of characters who used to inhabit that location --- and they have all gone or changed!
