The most common strategy is trying to pocket the 9 ball using a combination, even if the chances of the 9 falling are next to nil. Being common doesn't make it a winning tactic. Most people who chase the combo for the 9 lose a lot. If the combo is there, take it. If it isn't, try to run the table. You'll also get better, faster. Getting better means you start winning more. Going for a carom shot on the nine is also a useful tactic, if not so common.

One of the best strategies for 9 ball is to try to play your shots as an offence and defence shot at the same time meaning if your shooting at the one you leave shape for the two but block the one if you miss. by doing this you can leave yourself a easy shot and at the same time leave your opponet a hard shot.

After the break, the nine ball is in front of a pocket and there is no way to hit the one ball. The shooter calls "push out," and pockets the nine directly while leaving a hard shot on the one ball. The nine spots, but is relatively safe.
