    Stomach stapling surgery is considered either "cosmetic" or "medically necessary." Usually "medically necessary" is 100 pounds overweight in addition to other weight-related problems, such as hypertension, joint disease, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Insurance companies usually have to be persuaded that this type of surgery is medically necessary, many times turning down the first request and then approving it after seeing more evidence of its necessity (letters from doctors, test results, etc.)
